As I mentioned back in December, I finally had time to get the composite extension working in x.org. The result is right here. Click the image above for a full-sized version (1280×1024) of my desktop. I threw a couple of transparent windows along with VLC playing a video and other such stuff happening. It looks great, very much eye-candy-ish.
Amusingly enough, though, I’ve since disabled composite. Turns out that it does not work well at all with Xinerama or Xinerama-alikes (such as nVidia’s TwinView, which I so need now that I have to monitors running). I had to make my choice between eye candy or actual functionality (it’s impossible to overstate the usefulness of a 2880×1024 desktop), and functionality wins hands-down.
Still, I do miss the eye candy sometimes.
